Our 2011 Bulgarian National English Spelling Bee Champion









Alexander Emil Alexandrov








Our 2011 National Champion - Alexander Emil Alexandrov, 13 years old, 6th grade from SOU “Dr. Peter Beron”, Kostinbrod below accepting his award from the US Ambassador, James Warlick, on May 14, 2011. Alexander has studied English from 1st grade and loves Harry Potter books. Peace Corps volunteer Jill DeRose helped him to prepare for the final competiton of the Bulgarian National Spelling Bee. His dream is to be in the movie business when he grows up.

Regional Competitions
On April 16, Saturday, in the cities of Sofia, Vratsa, Veliko Tarnovo, Ruse, Sliven, Plovdiv and Gotse Delchev took place seven regional rounds of the first national competition the spelling of English (Bulgarian National English Spelling Bee). A total of 123 students competed in the second, regional stage of the competition after qualifying at the local lever where over 1000 students participated.

The race was very tight in all cities, Sofia and Plovdiv to continue over two hours with more than 30
rounds. All participants in the regional round received participation certificates, shirts and MP3 players, and their teachers, English dictionaries.


Winners from the regional competitions are:

Sofia

First place - by Tina Krasimirova Kamenova from the 28 School Aleko Konstantinov, Sofia.
Second place - Alexander Emil Alexandrov from School Dr. Peter Beron, Kostinbrod
Third - Kalina Svetlozarova Todorova, from School Letets Hristo Toprakchiev, Bozhurishte.
Plovdiv
First place - Reni Ilieva from Karlovo.
Second place - Radoslav Naydenov, from Karlovo
Third place - Neda Shishmanova, from School Nikola Baptsarov, Shiroka Laka, Zlatograd Municipality.
Ruse
First place - Paul Marinova Yordanova from High School Tzvetan Radoslavov, Svishtov.
Second place - Melissa Radoslavova from School Hristo Bote", Kubrat
Third place - Birdzhan Beyasetin from School Hristo Botev, Kubrat.
Veliko Tarnovo
First place - Mina Plamenova Karinova from School Bacho Kiro, Pavlikeni
Second place - Sasheva Stoyanova from School Bacho Kiro, city Pavlikeni
Third Place - Desislava Georgieva Dimitrova from School "Tsani Ginchev, Lyaskovetz.
Sliven
First place - Dimitar Antoine Karazapryanov
Second place - Maria Valentinova Valeva
Third - Slaviana Diyanova Chervenkondeva
The three Sliven finalists are all from the third school "Dr. Ivan Seliminski in the town Sliven.
Gotse Delchev
First place - Ekaterina Uzunova from the 2nd School, Gotze Delchev
Second place - Svetoslav Valchev Mathematics School (PMG), Gotse Delchev
Third place - Georgi Stoev also from PMG, Gotze Delchev.
Vratza
First place - Luboslav Assenov from School Ivan Vazoz, Varshets.
Second place - Alexandrina Alexandrova Tsvatkova from School Kiril and Metodii, Bregovo
Third place - Kristina Ivanova from Schook Ivan Vazov, Mezdra.

All winners received special certificates, medals and right to participate in the finals of the competition, which will be held in Sofia on 14 May. These 21 best spellers from across the country will compete for first place in the finals and are qualified, all with their English teachers to receive to special award from the organizers - English language summer camp in the month July. The first Spelling Bee Champion in Bulgaria will receive a Kindle™ electronic book reader.
